Piggybacking off of Nat’s comment - I’m curious how you’d showcase storytelling skills to recruiters and hiring managers.
Context: I’m not a designer, but actually a product marketer! In interviews, the feedback I’ve gotten is that I excel in strategy and GTM skills, but they want more examples of experience in storytelling. The last few years, I’ve focused more on growth, experimentation and pricing but I want to do more product launch again. Since I’m unemployed now, I don’t have the opportunities to build those skills at a company so I want to explore ways to showcase my storytelling.
I’m curious if you’d focus on creating mock examples on a personal website, with the audience being recruiters/hiring teams, or would you focus on more thought leadership and practical advice, with the audience being other PMMs? Both could be opportunities to showcase storytelling skills. Or would you suggest something else?
Thank you Scott for your advice, really appreciate it! This is THE area for designers with Senior+ level of experience to level-up on (like I'm trying to do myself).
Hi! I really loved this content, and I have a question: is humor a good tool to use in a portfolio?
Context: I’m building my first portfolio as a UX/UI Designer. I know what to include, but I’m hesitating about the storytelling style. I’d love to add things like:
• “Ha! Gotcha! You weren’t paying attention to the text I wrote, but don’t worry—you’re still doing great. 😌”
• “Let’s start from the beginning… [insert an image of the prehistoric era] Oh wait, not that far back!”
Something along these lines. I want to showcase my personality and stand out from the crowd, but I’m afraid it might be too much.
My target audience: Recruiters and HR professionals outside the design niche, as well as some senior designers.
